Have you heard of Invisalign®, but are unsure how the treatment plan works? Before making a firm decision about any dental intervention, it is best to get basic information about that service. At WestLake Dental Care, we are proud to say that we continuously educate our patients on their treatment options, including the positives and negatives about any service they are looking into, and we address any questions/concerns they may have. Learn all about how an Invisalign® treatment plan is made so that you can determine if this dental treatment is right for you.

Procedure Details:

Invisalign® 101

Invisalign® clear aligners are a relatively newer method of dental alignment. Instead of using metal wires and brackets, the way traditional braces do, Invisalign® uses clear aligners made of medical-grade plastic. These aligners are custom made by Invisalign® to fit the patient's mouth, and slowly move the teeth over time. Patients are also given a new set of aligners every 1-2 weeks to keep this process moving quickly but comfortably. A patient is expected to wear these aligners for 22 hours out of the day, and only take them out when eating or brushing their teeth.

Your Invisalign® Treatment Plan

Each patient’s Invisalign® clear aligner treatment plan will be different. This is because each patient has a different mouth, with a different set of issues, unique budget, etc. A typical treatment plan can last anywhere from 6 months to 3 years, depending on those factors. Below outlines each step of the plan, so you can understand the process before jumping in yourself:

A consultation with your dentist. The first step to any dental treatment is to discuss your options with your dentist. He/she has extensive knowledge on what is best for cases like yours, and they will be able to give their expert opinion on what you should do. Invisalign® is usually chosen for patients who have mild to moderate dental issues.

The next visit. Once it has been settled that you will be using Invisalign® as a treatment option, your dentist will need to collect data. He/she will take X-rays and scans of your mouth, and send these over to Invisalign®. This will help their lab experts to make your clear aligners, and ensure that they fit your mouth perfectly.

You will wear the aligners. When Invisalign® is done with your clear aligners, they will send them to you. You are then expected to wear these for the majority of the day, every day (specifically about 22 hours a day). You are also expected to take care of these aligners by making sure that they do not have any food or other buildup in them.
