How to Preserve Oral Health in a Dental Emergency

When you have a dental emergency, whether you have managed to make an appointment with us or not, there are steps you can take to aid your tooth and/or gums in healing. In many cases, dental cement like Dentep® can be very helpful in relieving any pain and discomfort as well as in preserving the tooth and preventing further damage. If you have a broken or fractured tooth but are not experiencing any accompanying pain, there is less of a need to make an appointment with us immediately; you can wait until it is more convenient for you, if you wish.

Teeth that have been knocked out require the most attention. Try to retrieve the tooth if you can and rinse it off with water. Hold the tooth only by the crown and not the roots, and do not use soap. You simply want to remove as much debris as possible. Try to put it back into its socket and hold it in place using a piece of gauze. If this is not possible, keep it in a container of milk or saliva and bring it into our Sterling, VA office where our dentist will attempt to put it back into place.
