Understanding Your Orthodontic Care Options

Experienced Invisalign® Professionals in Sterling, VA

When it comes to aligning teeth, there are only two main competitors in the game- traditional braces and Invisalign® clear aligners. Both are quick, effective ways to align teeth, and are used around the world. However, these two methods are different from each other in a few major ways. At WestLake Dental Care, we have utilized both treatment options to help our patients reach their dental goal. However, prior to starting any sort of alignment process, we ensure that our patients are aware of the positives and negatives of each service.

Procedure Details:

An Introduction To Both Alignment Services

In order to start discussing the differences between each service, we must first look at the materials. Traditional braces utilize metal brackets, wires, and bands to properly align teeth over the span of a few months or years. These braces will stay on a patient’s teeth until a dentist properly takes them off. On the other hand, Invisalign® uses custom-made, clear plastic aligners that an individual can take in and out of their mouth when they please. Where traditional braces must be tightened every couple of weeks, Invisalign® aligners do not. Instead, Invisalign® patients receive a new set of aligners every 1-2 weeks, and will then use those aligners until a new set comes in. Each set is a little different to help slowly but surely shift the teeth in the direction you and your dentist want.

Daily Differences of Braces and Invisalign®

Another difference between metal braces and Invisalign® clear aligners is that you don't have to change the way you eat and brush, like you do with metal braces. With Invisalign®, you wear the clear aligners for 22 hours a day and you only take them off when you eat. After eating, you brush your teeth or rinse your mouth well and put the aligners back in until you get access to a brush and toothpaste.

We supplement all our Invisalign® patients with a travel-sized brush and toothpaste for that reason. With metal braces, you have to use interproximal brushes, threaded flossers and special hygiene aids to be able to remove all the food debris that is packed under the brackets and between the teeth and the metal wires. There's almost always demineralization of enamel following removal of metal braces, which appears as chalky white lines. With Invisalign®, there is no difference in your brushing and flossing after eating.

Weighing the Positives and Negatives

Traditional braces and Invisalign® clear aligners can both achieve the results you are looking for. However, since they each have different features, one service may be better for a patient than another. Below outlines some of the most notable positives and negatives that a patient should consider before making a concrete decision:

Invisalign® Clear Aligners

PROS:

They are transparent and more inconspicuous compared to braces, which can draw negative attention to a patient’s mouth.

They are easy to maintain good oral hygiene with, since you can take Invisalign® out any time to eat, brush, and floss.

There is no specific diet you have to follow. Patients can eat whatever they want, whenever they want, as long as they don’t keep their aligners in while they eat.

CONS:

Invisalign® only treats mild to moderate bite issues. This means that patients with more complex dental problems will not be able to use Invisalign® clear aligners.

This treatment can be more expensive.

Since Invisalign® aligners are clear, they can be easy to lose.

Traditional Braces

PROS:

Braces can improve any dental alignment issues, whether big or small.

Braces are usually cheaper than Invisalign®.

There is no chance you will lose your braces since they are non-removable.

CONS:

Braces are semi-permanent, and are fixed into a patient’s mouth. This can make daily tasks like eating and brushing/flossing harder.

They are conspicuous.

A patient with braces cannot eat certain foods, like hard candy, caramel, etc.

Anyone with braces must go every few weeks to get their braces tightened, which can be inconvenient and uncomfortable.

How Do You Decide?

If you have done all the necessary research and are still having trouble deciding which treatment option is right for you, then the best thing to do is talk with your dentist. He/she will be able to give you their professional opinion, and explain to you why they think that one option is better than the other. This can also help you to be confident in your decision.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign®

  • Which is more comfortable, Invisalign® or braces?

Invisalign® aligners are generally considered more comfortable since they are smooth and do not involve metal brackets or wires that can irritate the mouth. Braces, on the other hand, can cause discomfort, especially after adjustments.

  • Are Invisalign® aligners faster than braces?

The treatment time for Invisalign® and braces can vary depending on the complexity of the case. Invisalign® may offer a quicker treatment for mild to moderate cases, while braces can take longer but may be more effective for more severe alignment issues.

  • How often do I need to visit the dentist with Invisalign® compared to braces?

With Invisalign®, patients typically need to visit the dentist every 6-8 weeks for progress checks. Braces, however, require more frequent visits—every 4-6 weeks—for adjustments and tightening.

  • Can Invisalign® be used for children and teenagers?

Yes, Invisalign® has specific treatment options designed for younger patients, such as Invisalign Teen. However, braces may still be recommended for younger patients with more complex dental issues or for those who may not consistently wear their aligners.

I've had excellent care for years. Dr. T is great at explaining everything, making it less stressful, and making sure you feel comfortable. Everyone is friendly and service is prompt. I would recommend Westlake Dental Care to anyone.
