Procedure Details:

Types of Restorative Dentistry

There are many different procedures and treatments that fall under the umbrella of restorative dentistry, including fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, and dentures. Depending on your specific needs, your dentist will develop a treatment plan that is tailored to you.

Fillings. If you have a cavity, your dentist will remove the decayed portion of your tooth and then fill the empty space with a material called a filling.

Crowns. A dental crown is a "cap" that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth. Crowns can also be used to support a dental bridge or to cover an implant.

Bridges. A dental bridge is a fixed appliance that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge consists of two crowns that are placed on the teeth adjacent to the empty space, with a false tooth (called a pontic) in between.

Implants. A dental implant is a metal post that is surgically placed into your jawbone to support a replacement tooth.

Dentures. Dentures are removable appliances that are used to replace missing teeth. They consist of false teeth (called pontics) that are attached to a metal or plastic base. Complete dentures are used to replace all of the teeth in your upper or lower jaw, while partial dentures are used to replace just a few missing teeth.

Does Insurance Cover Restorative Dentistry?

Most dental insurance plans will cover some of the cost of restorative procedures. However, it is important to check with your insurer to find out what is covered under your specific plan. Depending on the needs of the patient, some of the above procedures can also be considered cosmetic, in which case insurance may not cover service. Contact your provider for a better understanding of your coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Restorative Dentistry

  • What are common restorative dental procedures?

Common restorative dental procedures include dental fillings to repair cavities, dental crowns to restore damaged or weakened teeth, bridges to replace missing teeth, and dental implants for a permanent tooth replacement solution. Additionally, root canal therapy is often performed to save infected or damaged teeth.

  • How do I know if I need restorative dentistry?

You may need restorative dentistry if you experience tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, visible signs of decay or damage, difficulty chewing or biting, or have missing teeth. Regular dental checkups and cleanings can also help identify early signs of dental problems that may require restorative treatment.

  • How long do restorative dental procedures typically take?

The duration of restorative dental procedures varies depending on the complexity of the treatment and the individual's oral health condition. Simple procedures like dental fillings may take only a single appointment, while more extensive treatments such as dental implant placement or full-mouth reconstruction may require multiple visits spread over several weeks or months. Your dentist will provide you with a personalized treatment plan outlining the expected timeline for your specific needs.

I've had excellent care for years. Dr. T is great at explaining everything, making it less stressful, and making sure you feel comfortable. Everyone is friendly and service is prompt. I would recommend Westlake Dental Care to anyone.
