Jawbone and TMJ Surgeries in Sterling, VA

Helping Patients in Potomac, Ashburn

Jaw surgery is imperative for people with certain conditions that affect the jaws and facial bones. These conditions can cause problems with essential functions like eating, talking, and breathing. Jaw surgery may also be necessary to improve the function of your teeth or to give you a more pleasing appearance. At WestLake Dental Care, we will use our expertise to work with you and ensure that you receive the best possible care throughout the jaw surgery process.

Procedure Details:

What Does Jaw Surgery Do?

Jaw surgery can do a number of things, depending on the reason it is being performed. In general, however, the goal of jaw surgery is to improve the function and appearance of the jaws. This may involve:

Adjusting the position of the upper jaw and teeth

Adjusting the position of the lower jaw and teeth

Reshaping the bones of the jaw and face

Correcting a birth defect

Correcting an improper bite

Jaw surgery may also involve moving the teeth into their new positions. In some cases, this can be done at the same time as the surgery. In other cases, however, the teeth will need to be moved gradually through a process called orthodontics.

The Jaw Surgery Process

The first step is to schedule a consultation with our team. During the consultation, we will examine your mouth, teeth, and jaws. We may also take X-Rays or order other tests to get a better understanding of your condition.

Once we have diagnosed your condition, we will develop a treatment plan. This plan will be tailored to your individual needs and may involve one or more surgeries.

The actual surgery will be performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

The surgeon will make incisions in the mouth or face, depending on the type of surgery being performed. They will then reshape or reposition the bones of the jaw before wiring the jaws shut.

In some cases, metal plates and screws may be used to hold the bones in place.

After the surgery, you will need to stay in the hospital for a few days. During this time, you will be given pain medication and antibiotics to help with any discomfort and infection risk. You will also be given specific instructions on how to care for your mouth and jaws.

Once you are released from the hospital, you will need to eat soft foods and take it easy for a few weeks. You will also need to attend follow-up appointments so that we can monitor your progress.

Does Jaw Surgery Hurt?

During the actual procedure, you can expect to receive general anesthesia or IV sedation. This will help to keep you comfortable and pain-free during the surgery. After the surgery, you will likely experience some discomfort and soreness. This can be managed with pain medication. Most people report that the pain is not too bad and that it improves quickly with time. If you experience any unbearable pain or other problems after your surgery, be sure to contact us right away.
