Post-Dental Surgery Instructions From our Sterling, VA Office

Steps For a Proper Recovery

For many dental procedures, it’s important to properly care for your mouth after you leave the dental office in order to ensure that you stay healthy and that the treatment is ultimately successful. However, if you’re nervous about your treatment, have received any kind of anesthesia or sedation, or suffer from significant dental anxiety, you may not remember exactly what your post-op instructions included. Utilize the resources below in order to ensure you are properly caring for your dental health after the following procedures.

After-care Details:

What Should I Do to Care for My Mouth Post-Op?

It's important to follow your oral surgeon's post-operative instructions carefully to ensure a speedy and successful recovery. Although every patient’s instructions may be slightly different depending on the procedure, here are some general tips that you can follow to ensure a speedy recovery. These include:

Rest and relax for the first 24 hours after your dental treatment. This will help your body heal and reduce swelling.

Apply ice packs to your face for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day, to combat swelling.

Eat soft foods and avoid hot beverages for the first few days.

Avoid using a straw or anything that might require sucking.

Be sure to brush and floss your teeth regularly, but be gentle around the treated area.

Avoid smoking, as it can slow down healing and increase the risk of infection.

Take any prescribed medication or over-the-counter pain medication to help with combating soreness. If you’re feeling significant pain, contact your dentist as soon as possible.
