Custom Mouth Guards in Sterling, VA

Potomac, Ashburn Mouth Guard Dentist

A mouth guard is a protective dental appliance that safeguards your teeth against damage and excessive wear. Sports guards are often worn during athletic activities. They are also used to protect patients with bridges or braces. Typically, mouth guards can be clear or colored and are designed to fit over the upper teeth. This type of device not only prevents damage to the teeth, but it also protects the lips, tongue, and cheeks.

How Is a Custom Mouth Guard Made?

A custom mouth guard is made at a dentist’s office. First, a 3D scan is taken of your teeth. The scan is then sent to a lab which will create the mouth guard. In some cases, you may be able to choose the color of your mouth guard, or select a clear mouth guard. A week or two later, your mouth guard will be ready for a try-on. Your dentist will watch you try the mouth guard, and may adjust or trim it to make sure that it fits smoothly and securely in your mouth. Your mouth guard will typically come with a case to protect it when you are not using it.

WestLake Dental Care offers custom-fitted mouth guards as a part of our comprehensive oral health services. Frequently Asked Questions About Mouth Guards

Wearing a mouth guard while participating in sports can significantly reduce the risk of oral injuries, such as chipped or broken teeth and damage to the lips, tongue, and inner cheeks. It acts as a cushion that absorbs and disperses the impact that might otherwise cause serious dental injuries.

To prolong the life of your mouth guard, rinse it with cold water or a mouth rinse before and after each use, and clean it with a toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Store it in a sturdy, ventilated container to prevent damage and reduce bacterial growth when not in use.

A mouth guard should be replaced at the start of each new sports season or sooner if it shows signs of wear, such as tears or holes, or no longer fits comfortably. Regular replacement is crucial to maintain optimal protection, as a worn-out guard may not provide adequate safety against impacts.
