What to do right now
Bad toothache
Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss around the tooth in case something’s caught between it and its neighbor. A piece of food pressing on a nerve can mimic a much bigger problem. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek takes the edge off swelling. Skip putting aspirin directly on the gum; it doesn’t help and can irritate the tissue.
Broken or chipped tooth
Save any piece you can find and rinse it gently, but don’t scrub it. Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there’s a sharp edge, a bit of dental wax or even sugar-free gum over it can protect your tongue and cheek until we see you.
Knocked-out tooth
Minutes genuinely matter here.
Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly with water, no scrubbing, no soap. If you can, gently reposition it back into the socket and hold it there on the way in. If not, keep it moist in milk or tucked between your cheek and gum, and get to us fast. Teeth re-implanted quickly have a real chance of being saved, which is why the call to us comes before anything else.
Lost filling or crown
Rarely a true emergency, but the exposed tooth can be sensitive and vulnerable. A dab of clove oil on the area helps temporarily, and over-the-counter dental cement can hold a crown back in place until we can see you properly.
