Procedure Details:

Why Are Dental Repairs Important?

Dental repairs are important for both functional and aesthetic reasons. In terms of function, dental repairs can help to restore the ability to speak and eat properly. Additionally, dental repairs can help to improve the overall health of your mouth by preventing further tooth decay and gum disease. Aesthetically, dental repairs can help to improve your smile by correcting any imperfections.

The Dental Repairs Process

Depending on the type of procedure that needs to be done, you may need a:

Crown: In this case, the doctor numbs the area and shapes the tooth. The assistant will then take an impression of your teeth and create a temporary crown. This impression is sent out to the lab to make a permanent crown. When the permanent crown is ready, you will come in and have it placed. The whole process takes two visits!

Veneer: The doctor and you will decide what shade matches your natural teeth best. Then, the doctor will numb your mouth, prep the tooth, take an impression of the tooth, and make a temporary veneer. Then, when the permanent veneer is ready, you will have it cemented and shaped nicely to the tooth.

Filling: This process starts by first ensuring that your mouth is numb. Once the doctor numbs the area, he/she will drill the decay out of your tooth, etch the tooth, prepare the composite material, and cure light it to the tooth.

Inlay/Onlays: These are used when there is too much decay for a filling or there is not enough tooth structure remaining for a crown. The inlay/onlay restoration will be made of gold, porcelain, or composite resin in a dental laboratory. The inlay/onlay will then be cemented or bonded to the tooth.

Do Dental Repairs Hurt?

Most dental repairs are not painful. The only part that may be a little painful is when your dentist numbs your mouth before the procedure. Once your mouth is numb, you should not feel any pain during the dental repair. You may experience some discomfort after the procedure as well, depending on the type of restoration needed. This is normal and your dentist will work to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible. Additionally, be sure to follow any instructions that your dentist gives you in regard to caring for your mouth after the procedure.
